PRESS RELEASE
exhibition: Silvia Bächli: Fjall
date: 24 February-2 April 2011
Peter Freeman, Inc. is pleased to present Fjall, an exhibition of new drawings by Silvia Bächli.
The exhibition takes its name from the Icelandic word for the mountainous landscape of the far north. Many of Bächli’s recent works relate to the forms and colors of these remote highlands, their moss, lichen, creeks, rocks, and stones. Bächli’s work has almost always been in shades of black and grey but new in this recent work is an increasing presence of color—reds, blues, greens, and yellows.
Her imagery derives from the world no matter how abstract the drawings appear. Her shapes come from human form, domestic space, and landscape. Yet, these basic elements of body and environment are reduced to line and wash, isolated from context, and often running off the edge of the paper. Color further connects Bächli’s forms to the tangible, while highlighting the movement and pauses of the artist’s hand as one color becomes another.
In Fjall, Bächli presents over thirty new drawings, all in gouache or india ink on paper. They range in size from approximately 12 x 9 inches to 24 x 32 inches.
Born in Baden, Switzerland, Bächli lives and works in Basel. Bächli represented Switzerland at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 and in conjunction with the exhibition, published the book das. Bächli had two major museum exhibitions in 2007: a retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and a show of more recent work at the Museu Serralves in Porto, Portugal. Also in 2007, Bächli was the first recipient of the Daniel and Florence Guerlain Foundation's contemporary drawing prize, and the winner of the 2007 Baden-Württemberg prize for fine arts: the Hans-Thoma-Preis. Most recently, she has been given solo exhibitions at: Galerie Vera Munro, Hamburg (2011); Galerie Nelson-Freeman, Paris (2010); and Barbara Gross Galerie, Munich (2010). Her work is in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain (Mamco), Geneva; Fogg Museum, Harvard University Art Museums, Cambridge; Nordiska Akvarellmuseet, Skärhamn; and the Kunstverein Schaffhausen, Schaffhausen.
Tide, a new book by Silvia Bächli and Jamaica Kincaid, will also be available. In addition to the regular edition, fifty copies will be numbered and signed by both the artist and author, and twenty-six will be lettered, signed, and accompanied by an original drawing.
