One of the most renowned American minimalists, Dan Flavin created a vast oeuvre of sculptures that use light and color to redefine space. Taking commercially available fluorescent tubes in various colors and shapes, he arranged them in numerous configurations while never altering their prefabricated forms. The artist referred to these works as “image-objects,” as they simultaneously emit a brilliant field of light that extends far beyond themselves into the surrounding architecture, while still being legible as everyday fixtures. Throughout his career, Flavin often dedicated his works to friends and public figures, including Untitled (to V. Mayakovsky) 1, which was dedicated to the celebrated Russian Futurist writer Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893–1930).
