passage to 7, rue de Montpensier

Peter Freeman, Inc. announces its reopening in Paris in a new location at 7, rue de Montpensier in a space that faces an entrance to the jardin du Palais-Royal. “We have been wanting to reopen in Paris for a few years,” says Peter Freeman, “and are so glad finally to have again a presence in Europe, for that has been such an important part of the gallery’s history. This is a real homecoming for us, and I can’t think of a more perfect location than at the Palais-Royal.”

Along with Peter Freeman, the Paris gallery will be led by long-time Director Anne-Laure Riboulet. This move from the 4th arrondissement to the 1st in the area of the Palais-Royal renews the gallery’s presence in Paris with an eye toward the future for its international program.

To inaugurate the new space, Peter Freeman, Inc. will present En travaux, a group exhibition of 33 represented artists and estates that will run concurrently with the 2024 edition of Art Basel Paris. Included are Robert Filliou and Matt Mullican in which Paris is a central focus, as well as new works from French gallery artists Dove Allouche and Anne-Marie Schneider. Works by David Adamo, Silvia Bächli, Elisabetta Benassi, Ernst Caramelle, Jan Dibbets, Fernanda Gomes, Josephine Halvorson, Alex Hay, Charles LeDray, Hendl Helen Mirra, Rosalind Nashashibi, Roman Ondak, Charlotte Posenenske, Thomas Schütte, Lucy Skaer, Fiona Tan, and Richard Wentworth. Historic works by Slavic gallery artists Julije Knifer, Július Koller, Mangelos, Mladen Stilinović, and Goran Trbuljak will also be on view. Other important historic works include a rare bronze bust by the Italian Modernist sculptor Medardo Rosso, as well as a series of photographs by Anna and Bernhard Blume, a Measurement painting by Mel Bochner, and drawings by Robert Moskowitz and Franz Erhard Walther.

There will be a special presentation of Dan Flavin sculptures in the lower level of the gallery, bringing together three historic works all in only red fluorescent light: the only two works Flavin dedicated to the celebrated Russian Futurist writer Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893–1930) will be exhibited together for the first time in over 20 years, installed alongside his first ever arrangement of four fluorescent tubes, Four Red Horizontals (to Sonja) (1963).

We will install Tribute to Moondog (2024), a new bronze by Thomas Schütte being shown for the first time anywhere, as part of the Art Basel Paris public program at the jardin du Palais-Royal. The gallery will also participate in the fair at the Grand Palais in Booth C34.

Following En travaux, the space will close for renovations and reopen in Spring 2025, with a solo exhibition by Dove Allouche. The gallery maintains its exhibition program in New York, where it was founded in 1990.
